All Father’s Day Gifts Are Not Created Equal

For most of us, shopping for the perfect Father’s Day Gift can be a difficult, if not impossible
task. Father’s Day initiates the annual conundrum of what to buy the man who already has everything
he needs.

As a gift professional, I can assure you the last thing Dad wants or needs is another tie to
hang in the closet; and while the matching “World’s Greatest Dad” t-shirt and coffee mug was
a thoughtful gift, it doesn’t stick out in his mind for the right reasons. Finding the perfect
Father’s Day gift requires a little bit of effort and maybe a little bit of homework, but the
smile on Dad’s face when he opens the perfect gift is truly priceless.

Looking for the Perfect Gift for Dad? Think Backwards.

The perfect gift requires “reverse engineering.” In the gift business this means starting with the
recipients’ tastes, preferences and hobbies and working backwards towards the perfect gift. Instead
of finding the perfect gift and then trying to match it to the recipient, we start with the recipient
and work in reverse. Understanding this simple principal will instantaneously make you a better gift
buyer for any occasion.

When a regular client calls in frantically and says, “I need a gift for my Dad,” my first question
is always, “What can you tell me about him?” What kind of food does your father like? Is he big on
Barbequing? Does he love chocolate? Does he drink coffee? Does he love Italian food? Does he play
golf or fish? Is he a ‘Snack-a-holic?’ All these defining characteristics of Dad are paramount when
selecting the perfect gift. The more questions you can answer the better off you’ll be in making your
selection. When you get a gift that matches his preferences, your chances of him burying your gift in
the closet are significantly reduced.

You can create your own t shirt in a matter of minutes simply by taking an old shirt and adding something to it. Many teenagers shop at the local thrift stores for used t shirts and create their own logos and designs on them to make them stand out in a crowd. Creating your own t shirt can be a fun and rewarding activity for young and old alike. Some call it 'wearable art.'

If you are adventurous enough and have the time and own a sewing machine or can borrow one, you can start from scratch and make your own t shirt, then create the design on the t shirt. Most fabric stores carry t shirt material and you can find a pattern which are usually very simple to navigate and then sew together to make your very own t shirt. Then the fun part is creating the design or what you want to put on the t shirt to make it stand out from the rest of the everyday, ordinary t shirts you see from day to day. There are countless items you can sew on to a t shirt, such as buttons and patches or ribbons or charms to make a unique and one-of-a-kind design t shirt.

There are many websites on the Internet which allow you to create your own t shirt using a template or your own design which you would be asked to upload in to their program and once the custom t shirt is completed, you will be sent the shirt in about a week or so. If you choose to go the route of using the template, the computer will walk you through the process step by step and give you options along the way.

Here is a few tips for people looking for fast turnaround screen printed t-shirts. (These advises are for people looking for fast screen printed t-shirts instead of digitally printed t-shirts. Digitally printed t-shirts are done in a different process than screen print t-shirts, they have the advantage in speeding up the process since they do not need color separation and screen burning process. However screen printed t-shirts have better imprint color quality as well as better imprint longevity.)

Here is a check list for you to speed up your custom t-shirts job.

How ready is your artwork? Artwork can be categorized into 2 groups based on their origins. First are scanned images and second are computer generated images. In the first group, paintings, photographs, printed materials or the similar are scanned and save as digital files of your artwork. Quality of your digital artwork has a lot to do with your scanning resolution. Normal requirement is 300 dpi (dot per inch). However keep in mind that your reproductions will not be better than your originals. So no matter how high your scanning resolution is, you are simply not getting a better reproduction image if your original is not. So in a nutshell for people using this group of artwork, find the best quality original you can. Scan it at 300 dpi or better. Save it and send it to your printer without re-sizing it. The file size of your scanned image will potentially be big. However, supportive printer should be able to accommodate your file sending by either increasing the mail box size or arrange a FTP transfer for you. In the second group, computer generated images, we have 2 sub-groups which are raster images and vector images. Raster images are resolution dependant images such formats as tiff, jpg, psd.

The only requirement for this group is to make sure they are created in actual imprint size (or close to actual imprint size), and are in 300 dpi as original resolution (not resample resolution). The file size of this sub-group is potentially big, make sure you talk to your printers about the size of your artwork file before sending. The second sub-group is called vector based images such formats as ai, eps. They are resizable, non-resolution dependent artwork. Their file size are usually reasonable. They are very welcome by most printers due to their non-resolution dependent nature. When you submit vector based images, just make sure you create outlines for your type (so your printer won't run into missing font problem when opening your artwork), your image is created at actual size or close to actual size. And of course if you have a printer who is knowledgeable and capable in preparing artwork for you for a reasonable cost, that could be your best bet in making sure you don't waste time going back and forth on artwork format and requirement with your printer.

Do you know the type of shirts you want? There are many choices of shirts you can get . Make sure you did your homework and know what you want when placing an order for your custom t-shirts. If you just want basic t-shirts, it is pretty simple. Even though there are many brands of basic t-shirts, they are normally in 2 classes of fabric weight, 5.6 oz and 6.1 oz. Then you have pocket and non-pocket t-shirts for each weight, as well as long sleeve and short sleeve t-shirts. Beside basic t-shirts, you will have fashion fitting t-shirts such as American Apparel and Tultex, these are slimmer fitting than the basic t-shirts. They are in ring-spun 30 single fine jersey fabric, meaning softer and finer fabric. Then we have even more choices for girls and ladies t-shirts such as cap sleeve, raglan 3/4 sleeve, scoop neck, boys beater tank tops, baby doll spaghetti, ringer t-shirts, camouflage t-shirts etc...

Do you research on t-shirt styles ahead of time will not only save you time, it will allow you to find the best style for your event.

If your custom t-shirts job requires individual names or numbers printed (such as team numbers), prepare a list to indicate the names or numbers and their sizes to expedite the process.

If there is dead line to meet, make sure your printer is aware of it as well as taken shipping time into consideration.

If you are under press of time and without artwork. Ask if your printer has any kind of ready art library that you can pick and ask them to modify to fit your requirement. It will be much faster than having yourselves starting from scratch.

Give your printer the Pantone number to indicate your imprint color when submitting your t-shirts order. This will save some time in communication and help speeding up your order.

Your printer should provide a paper proof for you to review the accuracy of your custom screen print t-shirt order. As soon as you finish your review, get back to your printer immediately so they can process your order right away.

Last but not least, there are shipping options such as 3-day select, 2nd day air and next day air to accommodate your need in speed. Ask for full price quote with different shipping options from your printer.

Color Changing Tultex Fine Jersey T-shirt

  • Aug. 5th, 2008 at 7:48 PM

Color changing technology by PhotoChromic inks has been around the custom screen print and advertising industries for over a decade. The reason that this technology is still very popular among advertisers in custom screen print industry is the magical transformation of colors. This series of PhotoChromic colors come in basic colors such as red, blue, yellow, green and purple. When these colors are indoor and not exposed to ultraviolet light, they are almost colorless. However, when they are exposed to ultraviolet light (including sunlight) they will gradually turn into their own colors. The stronger light and longer expose duration, the higher the intensity of the colors. And of course there are limits as everything else, the colors will not increase their intensity after they reach their limits. PhotoChromic inks work the best with white t-shirts. However they also work with light color t-shirts such as natural. You would also want to take advantage of the magical color change by screen printing only a black and white image for the indoor image and leaves all the colors as PhotoChromic colors so they will only appear outdoor. In this way you optimize the color transformation between a black and white image and a full color image. We recommend PhotoChromic’s color changing technology for all outdoor events on t-shirts, sweatshirts and sportshirts. Imagine when your guests witness the magical color change. For sure that’s going to leave a long impression to them.

High Density Gel

  • Jul. 31st, 2008 at 6:22 PM

Do you know that you can add a layer of gel on top of your screen print decoration?  The result is amazing!  You will have a layer of 3-D looking coating on top of your custom t-shirt logo.  This effect works specially well with line art and outlines since lines would enhance the quality of 3-D effect. This effect is called High Density Gel.  It’s similar to other High Density ink printings that print 3-D effects as well.   However try to avoid application over a broad area, you may find the center area of the application depressed or lack of 3-D quality.  Custom screen print your logo with High Density Gel will definitely be something people are going to talk about.  So if you want to make your next custom T-shirt project an eye-catcher.  Try the High Density Gel!

Glow in the Dark t-shirts are great ideas for evening events.  It's specially effective in dimmed condition, such as night club promotions, lectures, concerts and theatrical presentations.  Glow in the Dark imprints work well on white background.  So as long as your designs provide a white background to the area you want to apply Glow in the Dark imprint, you can use any colored t-shirts you want.  You can use Glow in the Dark as a tool to highlight, or to send a hidden message (see below for example).  All prints shown below were done in silk screen printing.  Color separations were either manually done in channels or by Simulated Process.  Production were done with M&R automatic 14-color press.

Koi screen print t-shirts

  • Jul. 23rd, 2008 at 8:39 PM

How many favorite colors do you have?  At least three if you are a koi fan.  Red, black and white are the three basic yet the most important colors in nishikigoi.  The three most popular koi types, Kohaku, Sanke and Showa are perfect examples.  Kohaku (red pattern on white ground), Sanke (red & black spot pattern on white ground) and Showa (red and black stripe pattern on white ground or red and white pattern on black ground) together are so called Gosanke.  Value in a koi depends on it's body conformation, color completion and pattern.  Because of my hobby in koi keeping, I was able to work with some local reputable koi dealers on their custom company t-shirts.  Below are some samples of them.  All prints were done in silk screen printing.  Color separations were either manually done in channels or by Simulated Process.  Production were done with M&R automatic 14-color press.

Dragon screen print t-shirts

  • Jul. 21st, 2008 at 12:40 PM

During the past ten years of screen printing business, I was fortunate enough to work with many talented t-shirt graphic designers.  Many of them were highly specialized in their fields.  Even though specialization doesn't always benefit them in our dynamic clothing business,  they really master what they devoted themselves over time.  Among many designs, dragons are always my favorite.  Below are some samples of what we have done in the past.  All prints were done in silk screen printing.  Color separations were either manually done in channels or by Simulated Process.  Production were done with M&R automatic 14-color press.

Discharge Printing

  • Jul. 17th, 2008 at 4:50 PM

Discharge in screen printing technique means removing the pigment from fabric through the printing of discharge ink.  Discharge ink is a mixture of water-based-color base and discharge agent.  Once a dischargeable fabric is printed with discharge ink and pass through a heat dryer, discharge agent in the discharge ink will be activated by the heat and either reduce or discharge the color pigment in the fabric.  Therefore the printed area becomes so-called naked (without being covered by color pigment).  The resulting color of the printed area is usually in canvas color, which is the natural color of the fabric before it was dyed into different colors.  The hand feel is very soft since it’s not an additive process.

Discharge technique works very well with vintage looking designs because of the natural look and soft hand feel.  It also works better with dark color t-shirts since the dark color t-shirts will set a stronger color contrast with the natural canvas color.  The discharge technique can be applied with water base pigment.  Therefore discharge printing in color can be achieved.  It still gives you all the advantages including vintage look and soft hand feel.
